Italian Government – funded Project “Integrated and sustainable water management of the Vietnamese Red-Thai Binh River System in a changing climate” (IMRR) conducted by Politecnico di Milano and Institute of Water Resources Planning (IWRP) (2012 – 2016) has recently been awarded with the European Foundations Award for Responsible Research & Innovation (EFARRI) – 2015. This is the international recognition for the contribution of IMRR project to supporting Vietnamese institutions in sustainable management of water resources in the Red-Thai Binh River (RTBR) system.

The IMRR approach has drawn great attention from international water experts as it combines coordinated decision-making and stakeholder participation, supported by advanced modeling and optimization tools, and capacity building in local institutions. The aim is to build tools and knowledge to analyze trade-offs, considering human water uses, ecosystem needs and natural disaster risk management.

The European Foundations Award for Responsible Research & Innovation (EFARRI) aims to identify research groups that have successfully incorporated methods to align research with the needs of society and contributed towards the development of a smart, inclusive and sustainable society, and provide an opportunity to explore, articulate and share promising responsible research practices across Europe. The award is a joint initiative of the King Baudouin Foundation (Belgium), “la Caixa” Foundation (Spain), Fondazione Cariplo (Italy), the Lundbeck Foundation (Denmark), the Robert Bosch Stiftung (Germany) and the European Foundation Centre Research Forum.
