On November 11, 2020 in Hoa Binh province, the Directorate of of Water Resources and the IWRP in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoa Binh province organized the Inception Workshop on Planning for natural disaster prevention and hydraulic works for period 2021 – 2030 and vision to 2050 for the Northwest region.

The workshop was chaired by Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh - Director General of the Directorate of Water Resources, Mr. Do Van Thanh - Director of the IWRP and Mr. Nguyen Anh Quan - Deputy Director of Hoa Binh Provincial’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.  Participated in the workshop were representatives from the provinces covered by the study area including representatives from the Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development of Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La and Hoa Binh provinces. From the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, there were representatives of departments under the Directorate of Water Resources and the Vietnam Disaster Management Authority, together with invitees of some professional associations and research institutes including the Irrigation and Drainage Commission, Vietnam Water Resources Academy and Thuy Loi University.

At the workshop, the IWRP reported the directions to implement the Planning for natural disaster prevention and hydraulic works for period 2021 – 2030 and vision to 2050 for the Northwest region which focuses on planning for water supply, drainage, and natural disaster prevention.

The workshop also listened to presentations and opinions from the representatives of 7 provinces in the project area and research institutions on planning directions on natural disaster mitigation for the Northwest region such as landslides, flash floods and droughts.

Mr. Do Van Thanh, Director General of the IWRP affirmed that the Institute is actively implementing the contents of the planning for disaster prevention and control nationwide focusing on solving major problems of inter-regional and inter-provincial significance and long-term and specific problems for each region. For the Northwest region, Mr. Thanh affirmed that the Institute will update and incorporate the comments of the workshop’s participants to complete the planning contents in order to ensure the implementation progress according to the signed contract.

Concluding the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh, Director General of the DWR, suggested the IWRP accelerating the implementation of the Planning, based on collecting provincial suggestions and the DWR will provide relevant documents to the provincial agencies for their participation in the planning.

After the Workshop, leaders and technical staff of the Institute had a quick survey of hydraulic works in Hoa Binh province.
