The two organizations have built and maintained a long-term relationship in research cooperation and capacity building for remote sensing technology application in water resource management.
At this meeting, APDC and NASA / SERVIR experts introduced the Regional Drought and Crop Yield Information System (RDCYIS) - developed by SERVIR-Mekong and NASA, and the applicability of this system in Vietnam. With technical support from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the RDCYIS now allows both nowcasting (monitoring) and forecasting using hydrological and crop simulation models and has been regionally calibrated using observed stream flow records as well as remotely sensed soil moisture records. The RDCYIS will also provide crop yields estimations for maize and rice crops.
At the end of the meeting, the two units agreed on future cooperation plans including:
- Cooperation plan to build and improve the water resource forecasting tool for Institute of Water Resources Planning;
- Training and capacity building plan for IWRP staffs.
